The best time to trade GBPUSD
When GBPUSD moves most, when spreads are tightest and which hours to avoid, with UK times for London, New York and the news that moves cable.
GBPUSD (nicknamed “cable”) is one of the most traded pairs in the world and the natural choice for UK traders. It doesn’t move evenly through the day, though.
The best hours
- 07:00 to 08:00 (Frankfurt): often the first real push of the day. Watch it, but be careful acting on it.
- 08:00 to 10:30 (London open): the strongest window for most GBPUSD strategies. Volume arrives, spreads tighten and the overnight range often gets tested.
- 13:00 to 15:30 (New York open and the overlap): the second window. US data at 13:30 can cause sharp moves.
The hours to be careful with
- 22:00 to 00:00: rollover. Spreads can widen a lot.
- Red folder news: Bank of England rate decisions, UK and US inflation (CPI), the US jobs report (NFP) and Fed decisions. Price can jump past stops. Many traders, and many prop firms, avoid the minutes either side.
- Friday afternoon: moves often fade as London closes for the weekend.
Why the London open works for range strategies
Overnight, GBPUSD often drifts in a range. At the London open, price frequently runs the stops just beyond that range before deciding the day’s direction. Recognising whether that first run is a trap or a real breakout is the core skill. We show real examples in liquidity sweeps explained.

Questions people ask
What time is GBPUSD most volatile?
Usually the London open (08:00 to 10:30 UK) and the New York open and overlap (13:00 to 16:00 UK), plus around major UK and US news releases.
Is GBPUSD good for beginners?
It is liquid and active in UK hours, which helps, but it moves more than EURUSD. Beginners should use small, fixed risk and a tested strategy.
